The workshop will collect together leading international scholars of history and law to discuss the interrelationship between law and information regimes. The project, led by the new director of the Institute, Kaius Tuori, explores through a comparative lens the emergence of a new kind of knowledge production in Rome during the first three centuries CE, the convergence of issues such as the expansion and transformation of citizenship, the creation of a new kind of universal law and the changing ideas of community.

By studying practices of documentation and the mundane everyday writing such as lists, it will seek to uncover a wider transformation, dubbed an information revolution, in how knowledge was collected, ordered and utilised and what it meant both for law and the legal status of individuals not only in Rome but also in the provinces.
