From the introduction of X-rays and ultraviolet light in the examination of works of art in the early twentieth century, to today’s use of electron microscopy and XRF imaging, science has played a vital role in the study of art materials and techniques.
Over the last twenty years, the field of scientific research applied to cultural heritage has grown substantially, with scientists in museums and universities contributing advances in fundamental and applied research. Scientific information is now increasingly featured in museum exhibitions and programming, highlighting the need for an interdisciplinary approach and a close collaboration between art historians and scientists.
The aim of this workshop is to provide an opportunity for exchange and discussion among museum directors, curators, conservators, and scientists on the challenges and possibilities for a comprehensive and innovative contemporary museum practice at the interface of science and art.
