From Neronian to Papal decor. Some thoughts about grotesques (grottesche) in antiquity and the Renaissance

In this conference, the grotesques discovered in the Golden House pavilion on the Oppius in the late 15^th century are discussed as a Renaissance artistic motif and as interpreted by contemporary authors as expressions of fantasia or as inappropriate figures contra naturam. We also investigate whether grotesques belonged to the repertoire of ancient painters, especially those of the Neronian age, for instance, outside the Golden House in Rome and in the Vesuvian cities.
