EXHIBITORS HALL

The XVII International Congress of Classical Archaeology is a unique opportunity for publishers and book sellers to reach the wider archaeological community on an international level. This event represents the 50th anniversary of the first conference organised by AIAC in Rome in 1958, for half a century the AIAC conference has constituted a vital opportunity for international scholars to gather and exchange ideas and insights, independently of political, social, and cultural constraints.

In the last 50 years the Congress has met ten times in major cities, embracing Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East and North America, each with a specific theme. The main theme for this year’s congress ‘Meetings in the Ancient Mediterranean’ is divided into five central themes:

Exchanges in the Ancient Mediterranean
Meetings of East and West
Hellenes and Non-Hellenes
Italy, between Etruscan, Greek and Other
The Western Mediterranean and Africa
Art, language and religion

The provisional congress programme is now available online: www.aiac.org

Since the first meeting, the conference has attracted a substantial number of delegates from all over the world (beginning strongly with 728 delegates at the 1958 Rome & Naples congress, over 800 attendees at Ankara, and upwards of 1200 at Tarragona in 1993).

This year the Congress returns to Rome with 65 sessions in five days and an expected attendance of over 1,500 professors, scholars and students from all over the world. Plenary sessions held on the first and final days of the congress will give participants the opportunity to listen to lectures by world renowned professors, such as: Susan Walker, Paul Zanker and Margareta Steinby.

The choice of venue for the Congress could not be more appropriate, since FAO Headquarters (The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) stands close to the Circus Maximus and the Baths of Caracalla. A metro stop immediately in front of the building makes travelling to and from the venue simple
