Dear AIAC Members,

In AIACNews 36 we published the Berlin 2003 Resolution, which was formulated by the participants of the international conference “Illegal Archaeology? : International Conference on Future Problems concerning the Illicit Traffic of Antiquities”. This conference, organised by the Antikensammlung of the Staatliche Museen Preußischer Kulturbesitz, was held in Berlin last May on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Berlin Declaration.

Illicit traffic in antiquities is a problem that concerns all archaeologists. Despite legislation, the protection of cultural heritage in general, and archaeological sites and objects in particular, remains problematic almost everywhere in the world. Both as individuals and as members of AIAC, an international organisation of professionals in various institutions of archaeology (universities, museums, companies etc), we have a responsibility. Firstly, the responsibility to keep both society and colleagues informed, not only on results of research, but also on the threat to or destruction of archaeological data and on illegal trade. Secondly the responsibility to act and to take positions, if necessary. The AIAC Board is willing to do so on behalf of its members. AIACNews seems a suitable medium for information and debate. By publishing the Berlin Resolution in AIACNews, the AIAC Board hoped for reactions, which indeed did follow. This issue of AIACNews contains articles of Staffan Lundén (University of Goteburg) and of Luca Giuliani. Furthermore, a contribution by Michel Gras (Ecole francaise de Rome) summarizes French legislation. Needless to say that opinions expressed by individual authors are not necessarily shared by the editor(s) of AIACNews and / or the AIAC Board. The debate is open and we would very much welcome reactions and contributions.

The AIAC Incontri Season 2003 / 2004 started in October. The University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’ hosted the first incontro on public and private theatres in the Roman world. All three speakers kindly submitted a contribution for this issue of AIACNews.

We thank all contributors to AIACNews and we we wish all AIAC members a merry Christmas and a very happy 2004!
